Marine and Island Ecology of the Bahamas

 

ACCA Schools

 in conjunction with

Shedd Aquarium

 will sponsor a 4-credit hour course to:

 

 

Delve into the tropical world underwater as you explore habitats and animals found on and around the Bahamian islands.  Discover how oceanography and water chemistry affect marine habitats and island environments.  Develop identification techniques as you study species such as fishes, reptiles, plants and invertebrates.  Gain knowledge of techniques and procedures used in field research.  Become familiar with tropical marine and island flora and fauna, and survey a variety of marine and terrestrial communities in the Exumas.  Then board Shedd’s research vessel, the R/V Coral Reef II, and apply your newfound knowledge of field and research techniques in a nine-day field experience. 

 

 

Class Sessions:

Saturdays, March 29, April 5, 12, 19 and 26, 2008

One evening snorkel and swim checkout TBD

at the Scuba Emporium in Skokie

9:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

 

 

Destination:

Exuma Islands, Bahamas

 

 

Field Experience:

Monday, May 19 – Tuesday, May 27, 2008 (9 days)

                                                            Or

                            Tuesday, May 27 – Wednesday, June 4, 2008 (9 days)

                                                       Shedd Tuition

$2300 per student includes lodging aboard the R/V Coral Reef II and all meals.

                                       Airfare is not included in this fee.

***Please note:  If you are a weak swimmer, you will be required to take swimming lessons before departure for the field portion of the course.  You will have to set this up on your own.  We will require signed verification that you have completed the lessons.

 

The field experience will take place in one of two weeks, May 19–27 or May 27–June 4.  Please make sure you do not have conflicting school, graduation or work schedules.  Trip preference is given to graduating seniors.

A non-refundable deposit of $500.00 will be due on December 3, 2007 to guarantee your space in the course.  Please do not send a deposit until your application has been confirmed (we will contact you).  We can accept both checks and credit cards for the deposit.  The remainder of the course fee ($1800) is due at the first class meeting on March 24, 2007.  NO EXCEPTIONS.

Freshwater Ecology

Investigate the relationships between water, animals, plants, and humans using Shedd Aquarium as your laboratory.  This course will introduce students to the components of a freshwater habitat and a survey of the plants and animals that exist there.  Visit Shedd’s Local Waters gallery and participate in animal encounters to get an up close look at the subjects you are studying.  Two field trips will connect you to this habitat and the impacts you can have on it.  Conclude the course by conducting a project to further investigate your connection to freshwater environments and increase your research skills.

Course Expectations and Requirements:

Grades will be based on the following criteria:  attendance, participation, assignments, presentations, quizzes, final exam, and research project.  Attendance is required for all Shedd-based classes.

The grading scale that will be used is a straight scale, based on the above listed criteria.
